Varicose Vein Surgery

Although non-surgical varicose vein treatment is very prominent today, varicose vein surgeries are required very rarely in some patients. Varicose vein surgery is involved in the list of operations performed by attending physicians in Cardiovascular Surgery in Izmir and its surroundings.

The varicose veins are caused mainly by the "venous reflux" condition, namely, leaking downwards of the venous blood in superficial leg veins known as the "saphenous vein,". In varicose vein operations that require a medical specialist, varicose veins are cleared out and, and the purpose is to remove the enlarged blood vessels. Accordingly, the blood flow is regulated, and the patient's physiological and aesthetic complaints are resolved. Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlker Kiriş, who has been providing services in the field of varicose veins in Izmir, decides whether a varicose vein surgery is necessary after examining the type, degree, and extent of varicose veins, and offers you other treatment methods if required.

Do Non-Surgical Varicose Treatments Have to Be the Only Alternative?

Today, non-surgical methods are vitally important in the treatment of varicose veins. Almost all treatments are carried out through the needle hole. Also, it would not be right to argue that no surgical operation should be performed on patients. A surgical operation can be a better treatment option in a very few patients with severe vascular structures that are extremely twisted and excessively wide, who have had multiple attempts for varicose veins, and who have varicose bleeding or a recurring one. Besides, mini phlebectomy, the "microsurgery" method, is a good alternative to foam therapy for large and wide varicose veins.

A Varicose Vein Treatment Option: Varicose Vein Surgeries

Classical varicose vein surgery was the most common method in the treatment of varicose veins until the early 2000s and offered almost as the only option to patients. This surgery is performed with general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, which is a method of numbing the waist. The main purpose is to surgically remove the large superficial vein extending from the inner part of the ankle to the groin. For this purpose, a surgical incision is made on the skin inside the groin and ankle or knee joint. The vein is found and separated by tying and cutting. With the help of a steel wire passing through the vein, the vein is torn off and removed. Also, if there are large varicose veins, they are also removed one by one by cutting the skin.

Process Before the Varicose Vein Surgery

Before the operation, the required examination and anesthesia consultation are performed for our patients who have approved of the varicose vein surgery. One day before the surgery, the groin hair and the entire leg, where the surgical incision will be made, should be shaved. On the day of surgery, the patient is asked to go to the Cardiovascular Surgery service hungry in the morning and be ready for the necessary procedures.

When the patient goes to the hospital for the varicose vein surgery, the necessary official procedures are completed and the patient is hospitalized. Then, the varicose veins are marked with a pen on the skin before the operation. When the patient is in a standing position, the surgical incision regions are determined according to the designated size and structure of the varicose veins with the help of a pen.

Process After the Varicose Vein Surgery

After the operation, the patient is brought to his/her room and allowed to rest by raising his/her operated leg or legs to a higher position. With the disappearance of the anesthesia effect, the patient is walked every 2 hours for 5 to 10 minutes.

The severity of pain after the varicose vein surgery may vary from person to person. The reason for this is your pain threshold. If your pain threshold is low, it is normal to feel pain, but we will be providing the necessary pain relief supplements at any time to ensure that you have a comfortable resting process.

On the first day after varicose vein surgery, the patient’s wound is dressed, and the patient is dressed in his/her compression stockings. If the patient does not have pain and his/her condition is stable, he/she can be discharged upon his/her request.

Discharge Period After the Varicose Vein Surgery

It is stated that the patients should definitely be active to prevent deep vein thrombosis after varicose vein surgery. Short walks are advisable initially, and in later processes, the patients are asked to continue their walks whenever they see fit. After the varicose vein surgery, the patients should wear compression stockings. Compression stockings are not removed on the first day after the classical surgery and they should be removed on the other days while lying down. However, it is recommended to wear them again after getting out of bed in the morning.

In some cases, the removal of stitches may not be necessary after the operation. However, in case of stitches that require to be removed, you can apply to the Cardiovascular Surgery outpatient clinic 7 to 10 days later and have your stitches removed.

After the varicose vein surgery, medications should be taken properly, and regular checks, if any, should be done because it is recommended that the patients come for control and that they are examined within three months after varicose vein surgery. If there are capillary enlargements and small and bulging varicose veins on the skin, sclerotherapy and transcutaneous laser treatment can be planned.
